Kodo Leads vs. IHK-Firmendatenbank:
Official directory or finished list
The IHK-Firmendatenbank shows you which companies exist in a chamber district. Kodo shows you which of them need your product, who decides there and why right now. One is free, the other is fully researched.
The short answer
You need the complete population of a district
→ IHK-Firmendatenbank
Because commercial enterprises are compulsory members of their chamber, no compulsory member is missing from the IHK database, not even the twelve-person business without a website. Only craft businesses are listed with the chamber of crafts instead. No commercial database offers that completeness, and Kodo deliberately does not either: we deliver the companies that fit, not all of them.
Your budget for company data is zero
→ IHK-Firmendatenbank
Use is free. Anyone who only looks up a company now and then, or wants an overview of a regional industry, does not need a paid tool for that. Paid research only pays off once the hits are meant to become a call list.
You search by what a company can do, not by its industry code
→ Kodo Leads
An industry code says a company works metal. It does not say whether it mills on five axes, which materials it masters or whether it holds IATF 16949. Kodo reads exactly that from the company's website and PDF brochures. One proof from our own dataset: of 1,001 deeply profiled companies, 119 state an ISO 9001 verbatim, on their website, not in a register.
You need the trigger, not just the address
→ Kodo Leads
The membership record says the company exists. Kodo says why it is interesting now: the new hall from the company news, the open production job, the KfW grant, the change in management. Every signal with a date and a link to the source.

When is which tool the right choice?
Both tools have their strengths, the question is what your sales team really needs.
When is IHK-Firmendatenbank the right choice?
-

-
You want an address nobody questions
Name, registered seat and industry code come from a quasi-official dataset. For mailings to an entire industry in a district, or a market estimate by size class, that is a more reliable basis than any bought-in address list.
-
You research individual companies, not lists
If you want to know before a meeting how large a company is and which industry code it is filed under, the IHK database answers in a minute. For that purpose a paid list is the wrong tool.
When is Kodo the right choice?
-
You search by what a company can do, not by its industry code
An industry code says a company works metal. It does not say whether it mills on five axes, which materials it masters or whether it holds IATF 16949. -
You search DACH-wide, not within one chamber district
The IHK database is split by chamber. Anyone searching Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland at once queries one database after another and merges the results by hand. Kodo searches the whole DACH region in one pass.
-
You want the decision-maker with a role, not 'sometimes a contact person'
Kodo pulls managing directors and authorised officers from the imprint and team page, with function and e-mail address. The directory lists a contact person if the company reported one, and that is often not the person who decides on your equipment.
-
You want the list in your CRM, not in a browser
The IHK database does not provide a bulk export as a call list. Kodo delivers the finished list as CSV or straight into Salesforce, with all sources and contacts in one row per company.
-
You want to be able to read up on every claim
Every statement carries a link to where it was found: the certificate page, the job posting, the annual accounts in the Bundesanzeiger, the news item about the new hall. We show no number rating; the evidence is the rating.

The difference in one sentence
The IHK-Firmendatenbank is a quasi-official directory: it shows which companies exist in a chamber district, with name, address, industry code and size class. Kodo Leads is a research service: you describe which companies you are looking for and receive the finished list, with machine park, certificates, decision-maker and the documented reason why this company is interesting right now.
One costs nothing and is complete. The other costs from 0.70 euros per company and is finished. The choice comes down to one question: who at your company does the hours that lie between the directory and the first call?
What the IHK-Firmendatenbank does well, stated honestly
Commercial enterprises in Germany are compulsory members of their chamber of commerce and industry (IHK) unless they belong to the chamber of crafts. One property follows from that which no commercial database can offer: completeness for the compulsory members. Anyone who wants to see every IHK-registered metalworking company in the Ortenau district will find them there, including the family business with twelve employees that keeps no website and advertises in no trade directory. The Bavarian chambers alone list over 215,000 companies in their database by their own account.
On top of that: use is free, the filters by industry code, size class and district are enough for a first market estimate, and the address comes from a source nobody questions. For a one-off lookup, for a regional mailing to an entire industry, or for the question of how many businesses of this kind exist in a region at all, the directory is the right tool, and we say so here explicitly.
Where a member directory structurally ends
The limit of the IHK database does not lie in the diligence of the chambers. It lies in the design. A directory can only show what was recorded at membership: the basic data. What a company can do is not there.
An industry code says a company works metal. It does not say whether it mills on five axes, which materials it masters, whether it holds IATF 16949 or which industries it manufactures for. Yet these are exactly the traits industrial sales qualifies by. For the market overviews on this website we captured 2,276 manufacturing and trade businesses and deeply profiled 1,001 of them. 119 of these companies state an ISO 9001 verbatim, 15 an ISO 14001, 5 an IATF 16949, on their website, not in a register. In a member directory these details are not searchable because they were never recorded.
Three more things are missing by design. First, the trigger: the news item about the new hall, the open production job, the fresh certification sit on the company's website and on job portals, not in the membership file. Second, the reach: the database ends at the border of the chamber district. Anyone searching across Germany, Austria and Switzerland queries one database after another and merges the results by hand. Third, the export: a bulk export as a call list is not provided. The results stay in the browser.
What Kodo makes of this
Kodo starts from the company's website, not from its chamber membership. We read machine park, manufacturing processes, materials and certificates from the website and PDF brochures, pull decision-makers from the imprint and team page, add financials from the Unternehmensregister and Bundesanzeiger with year and source, and look for dated buying signals: new hall, capex announcement, open production job, KfW grant, new certification, change of decision-maker. Behind each of these statements is a link to where it was found. We show no number rating; the evidence is the rating.
The result is not a database you filter but a list you call. It arrives as CSV or straight into Salesforce, without onboarding and without an annual contract per seat. What we mean by a buying signal is explained in the glossary on buyer signals.
The honest calculation
Free is not the same as costless. 400 hits in the IHK database only turn into 40 calls once someone opens the websites, looks for the certificates, finds the managing director and phrases the opener. Those hours are the real price of the directory, and they sit in your time budget, not on an invoice. At Kodo they are included in the price per company.
The calculation you can do yourself: how many hours does your team need to turn a district directory into a qualified call list? Multiplied by your hourly rate. If the result is above the price of the list, the question is answered. If it is below, for instance because you only work one district anyway and the basic data is enough, stay with the IHK database. You get ten researched companies from us free of charge so you can do the calculation with real numbers. The prices are public.
